Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His existence was pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was to tend to his flock of rams.

Their gentle baas and the rustling of the gales among the solo tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day in day, watching over his wards imbued in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plot.

Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and here played a prank on the villagers.

One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help but found no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
